The Zezula Foundation wants zezulafoundation.org to be usable by people with disabilities. Our target is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
Conformance status
We have not completed a full evaluation against WCAG 2.1 Level AA, so we do not claim conformance. The testing we have done so far, and when, is listed under "How we test" below.
How the site is built
To support accessibility, the site uses:
- Semantic HTML — landmarks (header, nav, main, footer) and headings in order;
- Keyboard support — navigation and forms use native links, buttons and form controls; the header menus open with Enter or Space and close with Escape, returning focus to the control that opened them;
- Skip-to-main-content link on every page;
- Visible focus indicators — a 2-pixel outline, navy on light backgrounds and cream on dark ones;
- Color contrast — text colors chosen to meet WCAG AA (4.5:1 for body text, 3:1 for large text), including text over the homepage image;
- Touch targets — buttons are at least 44 pixels tall, and on touch screens every link and button has a 44-pixel minimum height;
- Responsive layout — pages reflow to a single column on narrow screens;
- Reduced motion — animations honor the user's
prefers-reduced-motionsystem setting; - Form labels — all form fields have programmatic labels;
- ARIA attributes — to expose the mobile menu's state (
aria-expanded) and the current page (aria-current); - Image alternatives — decorative images have empty alt text.
Compatibility
The site is built with standard HTML and CSS for current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. It has not yet been tested with screen readers.
Known limitations
The Foundation acknowledges the following known limitations and is working to address them:
- PDF documents — Some downloadable PDFs (annual letters, IRS determination letter) were generated outside this site and may not be fully tagged for screen readers. Alternative text formats are available on request.
- Third-party content — Donation processing, annual-letter signup, and contact form services are operated by third parties; their accessibility is subject to their own conformance.
- Screen readers — No screen-reader testing has been recorded yet.
How we test
Recorded so far (September 2026, during a site update):
- Automated checks with axe-core on 24 pages, with no violations reported;
- Scripted keyboard checks of the header menus and the donation form;
- Layout checks at 320 pixels wide on 21 pages, with no horizontal scrolling;
- A check that animations and smooth scrolling are turned off when the reduced-motion setting is on.
Automated tools find only some barriers. Manual review and screen-reader testing have not been recorded yet.
